A
limited edition of 20 writing slopes are being made by Alick Burt in
celebration of Nelson's Victory at Trafalgar in 1805. Their construction
includes timber actually taken from H.M.S. Victory. This timber was
recovered from a refitting operation that began in 1923 and is available
in a very limited quantity. |
| Each
slope comes with a certificate of provenance signed by the current captain
of H.M.S Victory and for each box sold on this site we'll make a £40
donation towards the H.M.S Victory fund, which is raising money for
a room in which the main sail from the ship can be stored and displayed. |
 |
 |
The
outside of the slope is made from French Oak pegged together at the
corners with Victory Oak. The construction method is rather clever
as to begin with it is glued up as a closed box. This is then cut
apart by hand and hinged so that the grain of the lid and box match
perfectly. |
| The
box opens to reveal two writing slopes framed by Victory Oak and covered
in English hide bearing hand painted representations of H.M.S Victory's
crest and Nelson's Last letter to his beloved Emma. |
 |
 |
The
drawer in the centre has a reeded front made from Victory Oak and
it's sides and back are made from Maple finely dovetailed together
with joints the size of a small fingernail! |
Below
this is the pencil box that lifts out to reveal a secret compartment
and also contains a lift out Victory Oak lid. The two internal flaps
are hinged using invisible cylinder hinges, which ensure there is
no hinge knuckle prominent on the writing surface. |
 |
 |
The
finishing touches are flush brass military chest handles on the outside
and an engraved explanatory brass plate in the centre of the top.
This is a unique opportunity to own a little piece of British nautical
history, captured in a item of period furniture. |
All
articles made using Victory oak will also come with a certificate
verifying the authenticity and provenance of the timber, signed by
the commanding officer of HMS Victory.
Dimensions: 46cm wide x 34.8cm deep x 15cm high (when open the depth
is 51cm).
